What Replaces Mercedes-Benz mbrace®?

Technology marches on, and cellular network providers are discontinuing 3G networks to focus on newer and more advanced 4G and 5G mobile networks. Unfortunately, this means that the Mercedes-Benz mbrace® system in older models will no longer be supported. However, with Verizon’s new Hum® device, it is still possible to retain wireless access.

As telecommunications companies begin to sunset and retire their 3G networks, thembrace® communications and safety technology no longer has access to a network. While this will not affect newer vehicles like the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC, which uses the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX®) framework, older vehicles will no longer be able to access these services and features.

The date of your model is the key to determining whether you will lose access to your communication module. If your model year is 2018 or later, you will not be affected by this shutdown, nor will select 2017 models. Verizon Hum®

Luckily for those who don’t want to trade in their older vehicles, Verizon Hum® can keep your car communicating and safe. Available as a convenient dongle, Hum® sends vehicle diagnostics and vehicle location data directly to your cell phone. If it detects a crash, it automatically files a crash report, contacts emergency services, and helps you call for roadside assistance. While this is an external device not supported by Mercedes-Benz directly, it’s an excellent option for anyone who still wants to use connected services.
