Born From Obsession

It started in 1967, when two Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, left the company to chase what the corporate world wouldn’t: pure motorsport ambition. They founded AMG® inside an old mill in Burgstall, Germany, with a singular mission to build and perfect racing engines. By 1971, their modified 300 SEL 6.8, famously nicknamed “The Red Pig,” stunned the racing world by finishing second overall at the 24 Hours of Spa against far lighter, purpose-built race cars. AMG® was on the map.

From Tuner to Powerhouse

Through the ’70s and ’80s, AMG® earned a fierce reputation for transforming Mercedes-Benz sedans into something extraordinary. The legendary “Hammer” of 1986 could top over 180 mph — wrapped in the body of an understated sedan. A formal partnership with Mercedes-Benz came in 1990, and by 2005, AMG® became a fully owned subsidiary. Today, every Mercedes-AMG® engine is still hand-assembled under the celebrated “One Man, One Engine” philosophy, with the technician’s signature on each completed unit.
