Using DRIVE PILOT® Safely in New Mercedes-Benz Cars

January 8th, 2025 by

While we may still be years away from driverless cars being common on the road, many vehicles now have some autonomous capabilities. For example, there are certain new Mercedes-Benz models that have DRIVE PILOT®, which lets the car take over for a while. Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles has the details on how this works.

What is DRIVE PILOT®?

DRIVE PILOT® is an automated driving system that enables drivers to take their hands off the wheel in specific situations. Using sensors and cameras, a vehicle equipped with this technology suite can detect its surroundings and make informed decisions.

Conditionally Automated Driving

It is essential to understand that DRIVE PILOT® is considered a conditionally automated driving system. This means that it can only be used in certain conditions, including approved highways, which are currently only located in California and Nevada. The system will only work in the daytime with clear weather without any construction zone present. Plus, speeds have to stay under 40 mph.

Safe Driving with DRIVE PILOT®

DRIVE PILOT® might sound like you could play on your phone or even take a nap while it’s being used, but drivers still need to be vigilant. They have to stay in the driver’s seat without it being too reclined and be able to take control of the car within 10 seconds. The vehicle will send warnings, including lights, chimes, and a seatbelt jerk if necessary.

Keeping Your Vehicle in Excellent Condition

Like the other safety systems in your vehicle, DRIVE PILOT® is no substitute for safe driving habits. Furthermore, it requires maintenance just like the subsystems it relies on, like steering and brakes. Contact the service center at Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles for a full inspection and maintenance. The functioning of safety features may change based on road and environmental conditions. While advanced and effective, these safety features are no substitute for safe driving.
