Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE®: Protection Before Impact
Air bags and crumple zones are designed to help during a collision. Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE® adds another layer of protection by making use of the brief moments before one. At Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles, we want you to understand how the system can recognize danger, prepare the cabin, and help put occupants in a better position when an impact cannot be avoided.
When the Vehicle Senses Trouble
The process begins with sensors already monitoring driving conditions. If vehicle systems detect certain conditions that suggest a collision or rollover may be imminent, Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE® can respond within seconds. Unlike technology that warns you of a hazard or helps apply the brakes, this system turns its attention to the cabin. That distinction is important: its role is to prepare for what may happen next.
Small Adjustments with an Important Purpose
Once activated, PRESAFE® can tighten the front seat belts, adjust the front passenger seat, and close the windows and sunroof. Each response is designed to help prepare occupants and the restraint systems for a potential impact. The changes happen automatically, allowing you to keep your attention where it belongs — on the road.
On newer, appropriately equipped vehicles, PRESAFE® Sound adds another thoughtful measure. It plays a brief burst of pink noise that can trigger a natural reflex in the inner ear, helping prepare your hearing for the sound pressure a collision may create. Equipment and system responses vary by model.
Select Mercedes-Benz models also offer PRESAFE® Impulse Side. If the system detects certain types of impending side collisions, it can rapidly inflate an air chamber in the front-seat bolster to help move the occupant farther away from the side of the anticipated impact. Availability varies by model and equipment.
PRESAFE® Protection Can Go Even Further
Depending on the Mercedes-Benz model and equipment, additional PRESAFE® technologies can prepare for other types of impacts. PRESAFE® Impulse Side can rapidly inflate an air chamber in the front-seat bolster to help move an occupant farther from the side of an anticipated collision. Available PRESAFE® PLUS can also respond when certain rear-end collisions are detected as imminent, extending the system’s protective preparation beyond frontal-impact scenarios.
