Because electric vehicles are relatively new, they’re still evolving. Mercedes-Benz, a carmaker at the forefront of green technology, has now helped develop a new type of EV battery. The expertise honed over decades in new Mercedes-AMG® cars will soon power a new generation of electric vehicles, and Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles has the exciting details.

Solid-State Batteries

In 2021, Mercedes-Benz partnered with Factorial Energy to develop a novel type of car battery. Three years later, Factorial delivered a brand-new solid-state lithium-metal battery. The lithium-ion car batteries found in current electric vehicles utilize a liquid. The new batteries, however, use a solid electrolyte. Not only does this improve cell safety, but it also boosts range and performance with a significant weight savings.

Longer Driving Range

One of the most significant benefits of a solid-state battery is that it is lighter, which enables it to have up to 25% more electric range compared to a conventional battery. The battery being tested now is expected to have a driving range of over 620 miles.

Testing Program

By the end of 2024, the new battery was ready for testing. The prototype solid-state battery was integrated into a Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan, where it was tested in a lab. In February, road tests began, and they are ongoing. When they are ready, these batteries will start to be implemented in Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles.

“Developing an automotive-scale solid-state battery underlines our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz. “We’re therefore excited to announce that we’ve started road testing with a prototype vehicle equipped with this advanced technology. We will gain crucial insights into possible series integration of this cutting-edge battery technology.”
